Just because we don’t speak the same language, doesn’t mean we don’t feel the same emotions. Pain, suffering, joy – it’s all part of the human, and animal experience and sentiments most living beings can relate to. We forget just how much we have in common with some of the most majestic animals. I think these moments of connection between human and beast are so touching and act as glaring reminders that animals are incredible creatures.
This video tells us the story of Darci, a recent burn victim who suffered horrific skin burns after a freak accident in her backyard. After a dozen surgeries, she’s managed to pick up the pieces of her life. She was still wearing her bandages when something remarkable happened to her at the Indianapolis zoo one day.
As Darci got close to the window to get a better look at one of the orangutans, Rocky, who is the most outgoing of his pack, something unbelievable went down. Rocky was pointing to her scars and bandages, looking at Darci with kind eyes. He motioned his hand in what appears to be a lifting motion, wanting to see what’s under the bandages. He’s communicating with Darci using his eyes, as he points, then looks up, still pointing and never losing eye contact.
This is such an endearing moment! The unlikely kindness and curiosity of an animal who defies all boundaries is so endearing, especially after all the hardship Darci has endured. She says, “He really made me see that compassion goes further than just human beings.” It’s also perfect timing that her husband was bang on with the camera and caught it all!
