We Charity is a children’s charity based in the U.K., and every year they host an event called WE Day. WE Day is an “unparalleled celebration of young people committed to making a difference.” The event “brings world-renowned speakers and A-list performers together with tens of thousands of young people to celebrate their contributions and kick-start another year of inspiration.”
This year, on March 9, 2019, the event invited celebrities like Liam Payne, Nicole Scherzinger, Naomi Campbell, and more. They also invited one of the most popular couples of our time: the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Only, no one in the crowd knew that Meghan Markle was going to make an appearance.
Prince Harry was giving a speech in honor of WE Day at London’s Wembley Arena.
“It’s you that are making the most impact in your communities,” he told the children. He said that he was glad to see them just as enthusiastic as they were last time, that he was surprised that they weren’t tired of all the activism. But then he said: “But you know the secret. Fighting the good fight—it doesn’t exhaust you, it energizes you.” He said they give him hope for the future because their optimism is inspiring.
He continued, “You see solutions when others just focus on problems. You are the most engaged generation in history. You care about values, doing the right thing.” He praised the younger generation, “You don’t judge someone based on how they look, where they’re from, or how they identify. In this room, you see the world for what it is—vibrant, colorful, mix, and full of promise.”
He then mentioned his wife, Meghan Markle. At the simple mention of her, the crowd went wild. He shared that Meghan always reminds him of her favorite quote said by Martin Luther King Jr. “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
By the end of his amazing speech, he says, “I’m now going to try and drag my wife on stage.” He goes to the right to where Meghan stands, and she walks onto the stage. More than 12,000 children burst into loud screams that only children are capable of making. Meghan waves as he hugs her husband closely.
