Sometimes, the random people we meet end up affecting our lives forever.
Meet Nancy
Nancy Abell lives in rural Washington state and likes to go for recreational hikes on the trail nearby.
The Pacific Crest Trail
The Pacific Crest Trail is more than 2,600 miles long and hikers need a week or so to finish the trail.
Her Usual Hike
Nancy was going on a usual short hike while dressed up for the weather and carrying a pack filled with supplies.
Meeting Kathrina
One day, Nancy met Katharina Groene who’s taking a much longer journey because she started down at the Mexican border.
A Gut Feel
Nancy grew concerned even if Katharina only had 150 miles to go to complete her journey. She knew that her trip would take her up into the mountains near the border of Canada, and she did not have appropriate cold-weather gear.
Checking The News
Nancy couldn’t forget about Katharina for the next seven days. She checked the weather reports, and when she saw that a winter storm was about to happen, she sprung into action.
Calling For Help
Nancy called 911 to report her emergency. Even if Katharina wasn’t actually missing, Nancy successfully convinced the responders that this hiker was out of her depth.
New-Found Friend
Nancy told the responders where they should look. The Sheriff’s department sent up a helicopter so it didn’t take them long to find Katharina, in just as much trouble as Nancy thought.
Katharina now sees Nancy as someone who saved her life, and you can watch how Nancy saved the hiker’s life by following her instinct in the video below.
