Rugged Patch Of Black Fur

He was returning from his hike one day when he spotted a patch of black fur on the side of the trail which he realized was a black bear cub when he went closer.

The Cub’s Condition

The baby bear’s fur was wet and he was having trouble breathing so Corey performed CPR. He wanted to save the cub’s life despite the risk.

An Attempt To Help

A year before Corey’s encounter, a father and son attempted to help a baby bison at Yellowstone National Park but the people weren’t happy about it.

Meddling With Nature

Carmen Twillie and Lebo M. said that humans are discouraged from intervening with wildlife because “it’s the circle of life”.

The Outcome

When the father and son fetched the bison calf to the ranger’s station, it ended up being euthanized because the herd wouldn’t take him back, and the father and son tourist got a ticket for “disrupting the natural course in an ecosystem.”

Corey’s Decision

Corey took the cub and risked jail time. He named him Elkhorn because he found it on Elkhorn Road and took him to the Turtle Ridge Wildlife Center in Oregon.

Elkhorn’s Status

Elkhorn was “malnourished” and “lethargic” when he came into the center, and when he recovered, he cannot be brought back into the wild ever again.

Corey Was Reminded

In the end, Corey was contacted by the police and was reminded about the law instead of being fined or being sent to jail.
