If you’re a commuter, then you know how much of a hassle it is to chase after buses and trains just to get to and from your destination, but think of how much more difficult it is for disabled people to utilize public transportation.
Meet Chris And Monica
Chris Scharrer is a wheelchair-bound person, and his mom, Monica Ward Scharrer, faced her “worst nightmare” when they were on their way home from New York City one day.
Hockey Fans
The mother and son are huge fans of hockey, so they went to a game in New York to support their favorite team, the Rangers.
A Fun Night
Chris and Monica had a great time watching the game. However, things started getting worrisome when they were on their way back home.
Struggles Of Commuting
The mother and son needed to ride the train to get back home but they found out that the elevator was broken at the time and completely out of service.
A Good Samaritan
Monica started worrying that they might get stuck at the station for quite some time, but a kind police officer named Officer Mears offered them help and personally escorted them toward the nearest elevator.
He Made Sure They Were Safe
The officer’s kindness did not end on the elevator, as he even helped Chris use the disability ramp to get onboard the train.
Extra Mile
Monica was moved by the police officer’s kindness. She said, “Then he escorted us to the LIRR, found out before all commuters what track we were on, brought us down, and set up the ramp for Christopher to get on the train before the rush of all the passengers.”
Heart For The Disabled
After a quick chitchat with Officer Mears, Monica learned that he spent 6 years working with disabled people before he became a police officer, and that’s how he got a soft spot in his heart for people like Chris.
