When ballerinas set their feet on stage, they suddenly become the most graceful creatures on earth.
An Evolving Dance
Ballet is famous all around the world and has defined the foundational techniques which are used in many other dance genres. Various cultures have incorporated their own styles and genres so ballet has eventually evolved in various ways.
Meet Milena
Milena Sidorova is an award-winning Dutch dancer and choreographer known for inventing various ballet choreographies.
The Spider Dance
Milena has created over 20 unique choreographies and one of the most famous ones is called “The Spider”.
Her Story
Milena explained in an interview, “As a kid, I really loved spiders, and I used to observe them a lot.” She also described how she came up with the moves by goofing around and imitating spider movements for her mom.
It Requires Flexibility
Milena said, “The spider pose demands a certain flexibility in your hips and lower back that even most professional dancers do not possess.”
Resembling A Spider
Talented Milena manages to make her arms and legs resemble the eight legs of a spider. It must have taken her a lot of practice before she was able to pull off this choreography.
Moving Like A Spider
Milena said that the most challenging parts of the routine are the first pose and the walk across the stage after that, and it’s not surprising that it actually took her about two months to perfect the routine.
Winning Piece
Many people had danced “The Spider” publicly without Milena’s permission, which is illegal, but those who have asked for permission to dance “The Spider” have all ended up winning awards.
