Iam’s dad got sick a couple of years ago and had to go through dialysis. That was when he realized he only had a few days to live.

As his dad was the one who introduced him to the love of music, Iam spent a lot of time with him in his last few months, recording videos of themselves singing together.

Iam’s mom, Lillie, said that, now that his dad is gone, he would watch those videos before he sleeps and when he’s feeling lonely. His father’s passing affected him so much that there were times when he wouldn’t even want to sing anymore.

On American Idol 2023’s competition night for the top 24, Iam performed his version of “Sound Of Silence” by Simon & Garfunkel.

The audience and the judges were in awe the whole time he was playing. Iam was just sitting at the center of the stage, playing his guitar, and singing the song effortlessly, but that was all it took to captivate everyone in the room.

All three judges, Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan, were exclaiming compliments while he was performing. Katy Perry even shed some tears while listening to his angelic voice, and, of course, all three of them gave him a standing ovation at the end.

When the results came in, Katy Perry said that there was only one spot left for the top 24, and that Iam got it.

After his competitors, Matt Wilson and Colin Stough, congratulated him, the judges then revealed that the producers decided to bump up the top 24 into top 26, which meant that all three of them were in for the next round.
