US Coast Guard Rescues Dog Who Had Been Trapped In Shipping Container For Days

This story proves the critical timing of rescue and the importance of being observant despite the tiresome routines of our daily jobs.

A Day At Work

US Coast Guard officer Ryan McMahon and his colleagues were shocked to hear what sounded like barking coming from one of the thousands of containers towering around them on a regular day of inspecting shipping containers at the Port of Houston.

25 Feet Above

In a video, one inspector was seen looking up at the enormous container that was 25 feet in the air and remarked, “Oh, it’s scratching, dude.”

It’s A Dog

Using a crane, they lowered the container and there they found a sweet and friendly dog who seemed to have been trapped in there for at least eight days without any food or source of water.

Adorable Dog

Ryan McMahon, a petty officer 2nd class, said, “As soon as we opened it, we could see the little dog’s face poking out. She seemed happy, more than anything, to be out of that dark space and in the arms of people that were going to take care of her.”

Connie The Container Dog

The Coast Guard officials named the pup “Connie the container dog” and brought her to an animal shelter in Pasadena, where she underwent a check-up.

She’s In Safe Hands

The rescue group “Forever Changed Animal Rescue” took Connie in and worked towards her health and eventual adoption. Sadly, they found out that she was slightly underweight and tested positive for heartworm, so she would have to undergo treatment and receive intensive care.

Right Place At The Right Time

McMahon thanked God for his serendipitous timing and underlined how crucial the rescue was in stopping the container from being loaded onto a cargo ship. He admitted that it would have taken the container at least a week longer to get to its destination and that Connie probably wouldn’t have made it through the first two weeks without food or water.

All The Love For Connie

The inspectors were not able to adopt Connie themselves because they already have their own dogs at home but they were confident that Connie would soon find a loving home. McMahon said, “We know with all this, she’s going to go to a good home where they love her and take care of her.”
