The San Jose Animal Care Center contacted Nine Lives Foundation, a no-kill cat shelter in Redwood City, California, which took the little kitten for emergency medical care.

The shelter named the 7-month-old kitten “Smurf.” Upon check-up, they discovered that Smurf had 15 puncture wounds all over his body.

The rescuers said that Smurf was probably used as a bait animal, most likely for fighting dogs.

Treating Him

Smurf was shaved to help treat his wounds. He was also given multiple baths and some antibiotics for treatment.

Undergoing Surgery

The kitten rested for a few days before undergoing surgery the following week “to repair the large wound on his right leg/knee but all the other wounds are healing nicely”.

He’s Got A Friend

Smurf made a good friend in the shelter named Wanda. The rescue group said that she “takes good care of him,” and luckily the two best friends will be going into foster care together.

After a few months of treatment and a daily dose of love and care, Smurf has already transformed into a healthy cat. His beautiful, unique gray fur has grown and only a few small patches of purple are left on his fur.
