The field of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) is particularly dominated by men, and Jared is one of those who’ve witnessed the treatment his female peers are receiving.

Letting His Thoughts Out

So he wrote a letter for his student newspaper, the Easterner, and pointed out the things between him and his fellow female engineering students that are very much unequal.

Discouragements And Judgments

In his letter, he said, “I did not, for example, grow up in the world that discouraged me from focusing on hard science. Nor did I live in a society that told me not to get dirty, or said I was bossy for exhibiting leadership skills.”

Too Masculine?

He also said, “I was not bombarded by images and slogans telling me that my true worth was in how I look and that I should abstain from certain activities because I might be thought too masculine.”

Discrimination In School

He also spilled his observation while he was a student at school. He said, “I was not overlooked by teachers who assumed that the reason I did not understand a tough math or science concept was, after all, because of my gender.”

His Closing Statement

He ended his letter with the words, “So, you and I cannot be equal. You have already conquered far more to be in this field than I will ever face.”

Many people were moved by Jared’s open letter. We bet you’ll get touched too after watching his video below.
