Dogs who have formed special bonds with their owners have a good sense of when their humans need help.

Sadie is a 6-year-old German shepherd who was surrendered at Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge in New Jersey.

Standoffish Personality

Heather Centrella, the front office manager at Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge said, “(Sadie was) a little standoffish when she first came, and she wasn’t sure what was going on. She became a little bit shut down in the shelter, so we knew she was going to need an experienced home with someone who was patient.”

The Perfect Owner

Luckily, a man named Brian Myers decided to adopt her, and the staff was surprised by Sadie’s enthusiasm for Brian. He said, “She jumped into my car, and we’ve developed a strong bond. I was able to work through the issues she had and committed to giving her the home and love she deserved.”

An Emergency

Sadie and Brian bonded for months. They were having a great time until one day when Brian had a stroke while at home, and his “cellphone was on the dresser about 15 feet away, but there was no way I could get to it.”

Upon seeing her owner in distress, Sadie jumped into action and licked Brian’s face to try and revive him. She did not leave his side and kept barking for help. Brian reached out to grab her collar and to his surprise, Sadie used all of her strength to drag him across the room so he would be closer to his phone.

He Called For Help

Brian was able to reach his phone and call for help. He spent some days at the hospital and then in rehab. But what he still couldn’t wrap his mind around was how Sadie was able to understand his situation. He said, “She was not trained as a service dog, but she was in distress over what was happening, and she could tell that I was in trouble. I don’t know how she did it, but she knew.”

Their Reunion

When he had recovered, and it was time for him to go home, Sadie was there to fetch him from the hospital. Upon seeing the dog that saved his life, Brian shed tears as Sadie leaped into his arms and covered his face with kisses.

Best Decision

Brian was just so grateful for Sadie. He said, “It was the best decision I’d ever made to adopt her. I really feel it was meant to be.”
