The waters are full of mystery, but little do we know, they’re also full of wonderful creatures that need saving sometimes.
Keeping Track Of The Whales
Michael Fischback is a co-founder of Earth Island Institue’s Great Whale Conservancy. He Spends two months in the Sea of Cortez to photograph whales to keep track of them in their natural habitat.
Boating Trip
On Valentine’s Day in 2011, he went with his family and friends on a boating trip in the Sea of Cortez, but they didn’t know that they were up for a surprise.
A Steady Whale
While enjoying their boating activity, they spotted a young humpback whale that appeared to be in distress, if not lifeless.
He Approached Her
They floated next to the whale they named Valentina but they didn’t see any sign of life until she let out a struggling breath. That’s when Michael decided to carefully swim towards her with his snorkeling gear.
She’s Trapped
Michale discovered that Valentina was severely entangled in a net that’s used by local fishermen within the area.
Saving Valentina
With everything they could, the boaters tried to set Valentina free from the net, but it was too complicated. When the whale felt distressed, she swam for a few minutes, dragging Michael’s boat with her through the waters.
She’s Free
After a few more tries, Valentina finally made it out of the net. Thanks to the effort of Michael and his family and friends.
Saying Thank You
Right after being free from entanglement, Valentina provided the boaters an incredible full surface display of breaches, tail lobs, tail slaps, and pectoral tail slaps. It’s as if she’s saying thank you to her rescuers.
