When duty calls, the responsible ones will definitely drop everything to fulfill their mission.
Graduation Day
On graduation day, most students want to spend the whole day celebrating with friends and families but these six students decided to become heroes on their special day.
Responsible Teens
Six seniors from Earl L. Vandermeulen High School in Port Jefferson, Long Island named Ryan Parmegiani, Kasumi Layne-Stasik, Hunter Volpi, Andrew Patterson, Shane Hartig, and Peter Rizzo whose ages range from 17-18 years old jumped into action when they heard the siren.
They’re Volunteers
The teenagers are volunteers with the Port Jefferson Fire Department and they didn’t leave their duty even on their graduation day.
A Celebratory Siren?
The siren went off around 7:30 PM. At first, the students thought it was a celebratory siren. Kasumi Layne-Stasik said, “Apparently, it went off twice. The first one was congratulatory, I didn’t hear that because I was too caught up in the moment and everyone’s throwing their caps up.”
They Rushed Out
Peter Rizzo immediately rallied his friends to head out. He, himself, even forgot his tie was still on when responding to the fire while the whole group sprinted with diplomas in hand.
No Casualties
They were able to put out the fire that started in a garage in the back of a house at a classmate’s home who had also graduated. Fortunately, there were no casualties from the incident. Thanks to the students’ quick response.
Proud Principal
Earl L. Vandermeulen High School High Principal Eric Haruthunian shouted out the brave students through a tweet that said, “Our amazing alumni (by only 20 minutes) sprang into action to help their community. Great job Ryan, Andrew, Shane, Hunter, Kasumi, and Peter.”
Chief’s Commendation
Port Jefferson Fire Chief Christian Neubert also expressed his appreciation for the students who have been volunteering with them since they were 14-year-olds.
