Gertrude is one of the ducks at Lofty Hopes. She was abandoned and has a disability, wherein the bones in her legs are “like sugar,” as vets say.

Fighting In Life

Despite her sad history, Gertrude is one persevering duck, as she doesn’t get tired of trying to learn how to walk.

Practice Makes Perfect

Mariah gave her a wheelchair which has become her constant companion in practicing using her legs. She’d tap and move fast in it, and she never gets tired of doing her best.

Part Of The Family

On some days, Mariah and her family would take Gertrude on trips. They let her do fun things like dipping into the water while she is on a floaty and retractable leash.

A Winning Moment

One day, Gertrude’s hard work and patience paid off and she finally managed to stand up on her own. Mariah, upon witnessing this moment, was emotional and immensely happy for her duck.

She’s An Inspiration

Gertrude has also made a friend named Duckleberry Finn, another duck that was found in the middle of a desert. He was also not able to walk when he got into the shelter but Gertrude became his inspiration to keep on trying.

Her New Home

Eventually, a lady who had a lake and baby ducks adopted Gertrude, and although Mariah had already formed a special bond with the duck, she still wanted what was best for her so she let her go and live her best life in her new home.
