Deaf Dog Who’s Been Missing For 11 Months Is Reunited With Owner

If you have a dog who has already been a part of your family, it’s heartbreaking when they get lost. You think of how scared they must be, and you cannot do anything about it.

Meet Rufus

Rufus is a deaf dog who his fur mom also treats as one of her children.

His Story

Rufus became part of Marisa’s, a single mom, family when her nine-year-old daughter, Zamora Moon, passed away from rare cancer in June 2017.

“Healing” Dog

Marisa’s best friend from Albuquerque gave Rufus to her to somehow ease her and her children’s grief.

His Condition

Marisa and her family didn’t know that Rufus was deaf at first, but they eventually learned about his condition when he wouldn’t respond to loud sounds.

A New Life

Aside from being deaf, Rufus was also an abused dog with his first owners, but Marisa and her family loved him despite his past and decided to leave their past behind by moving to Santa Fe, New Mexico.

He Went Missing

The move and the new environment might have been too much for Rufus, which could have been the reason he escaped a month after the move. He disappeared for 11 months but his family didn’t give up hope and kept on looking for him.

A Good Samaritan

One day, a motorcyclist named Arabel Solis spotted Rufus near the Santa Fe Animal Shelter. He took a photo and reported the stray to Team Frijoles, a local volunteer group that’s helping Marisa in finding Rufus.

It’s Rufus

Team Frijoles set up cameras, a feeding area, and a way to trap the dog. When they captured him, they took him to the vet, checked his microchip, and confirmed that he was really Rufus.

The Reunion

They immediately informed Marisa, and when she got home from Spain, she immediately went to pick up Rufus who smelled her at first to confirm that she was indeed his mom. When his tail began to wag, he started getting ecstatic to finally be with his mom again.
