Meet Mohamed
YouTube, PBS NewsHour65-year-old Mohamed Bzeek is a former Libyan immigrant who arrived in the United States more than forty years ago.
His Story
PexelsMohamed was once a marathon runner before he married his late wife and became a citizen of the United States in 1997.
Their Purpose
YouTube, PBS NewsHourMohamed and his wife have been adopting orphans left at hospitals since 1995, and he has continued doing this even after his wife was gone.
His Golden Heart
YouTube, PBS NewsHourHe has fostered 80 children over the past years. He said, “I adopt orphans left at hospitals or taken from their families by the state because of violence and pressure.”
Nameless Children
PexelsMohamed said that the Department of Child Services in LA would tell him when children are about to pass away and ask if he can adopt them, and he doesn’t hesitate to accept. He said, “In the hospital, they give birth, they leave them. Their families don’t name them. It comes on the paper: ‘Baby boy,’ ‘Baby girl.’ I name them. I give them names.”
His Own Battle
YouTube, PBS NewsHourIn 2019, Mohamed got diagnosed with stage 2 colon cancer, and to add to that, his son, Adam, was also born with brittle bones and dwarfism.
Building Empathy
YouTube, PBS NewsHourMohamed’s strength empowered him to not be defeated by his problems. He even said that he got scared when the doctors told him about his cancer but this gave him a deeper empathy on how terrified his fostered children must have felt.
Helping Mohamed
PexelsHis story touched a lot of people’s hearts and moved them to initiate a fund-raising drive to at least help Mohamed with his financial needs.
The “Muslim Mother Theresa”
PexelsThe Diyanet Foundation awarded Mohamed the International Benevolence Award. His life has also been made into a documentary entitled “Guardian of Angels,” and people have nicknamed him “Muslim Mother Theresa” because of his good deeds.
