Juliana, also known as Jules, a blind 17-year-old student at Zeeland Public Schools, is a remarkable and inspiring athlete.
Special Program
Juliana’s school is very proud of its peer-to-peer program called zLinks, which is a component of Special Olympics Unified Sports.
Promoting Inclusivity
Zeeland Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Brandi-Lyn Mendham calls the program a “point of pride,” emphasizing its role in creating a welcoming and inclusive learning environment.
Her Partner
Allie, who has been Juliana’s friend since middle school, has been with her all throughout her basketball journey, helping her train, and guiding her within the court.

During their high school basketball game, the gym, packed with 2500 people, went completely silent when it was Juliana’s turn to make a free throw shot.

This silence was important to Juliana. It gave her the opportunity to employ her special listening method for locating the net through tapping—a skill she had developed to compensate for her blindness—while playing basketball.
