Persistent Mom Who Read To Her Blind Daughter Through Law School Receives Honorary Law Degree

Meet Berru

Berru Merve Kul is a visually impaired young woman from Kocaeli, Turkey who was pursuing her law degree at the University of Sakarya.

A Challenge

Since being at law school meant having to read lots of books and materials, it was a challenge for Berru to go through her lessons without her mom’s help.

She’s Her Eyes

Berru’s mom, Havva Kul, read her lecture notes through four years of law school and tirelessly helped her with her homework.

An Extra Mile

Although there are already lots of schools and universities equipped with the technology and education system for the visually impaired, not all learning facilities, like Sakarya University, could afford those, so people with disabilities like Berru really need a helping hand to accomplish things at school.

She’s Got Her Back

Thanks to Havva’s persistence and relentless love for her daughter, Berru was able to survive law school.

Graduation Day

Berru Merve was able to graduate with a degree in law at Sakarya University at the age of 22, and the university invited her mom to be on stage as well.

She’s Got A Degree Too

Professor Mahmut Bilen, Dean of the Faculty of Law of Sakarya University, commended Havva for doing everything to help her daughter reach her dreams and presented her with an honorary law degree.

People Are Praising Her

Professor Bilen also shared the precious moment on Twitter where people had been praising the heroic mom for what she did for her daughter. They were naming her “Mother of the Year” and “Mother of the Century,” which we think are well-deserved titles for her.
