Abandoned Baby Chimp In Cardboard Box Gets Rescued

Babies need extra care and attention since they’re still unfamiliar with the world. However, there are newborn babies (both humans and animals) who are out of luck, and they have to face life without their families.

A Sad Sight

One day, a team of rescuers from Liberia Chimpanzee Rescue and Protection received an anonymous tip about a chimp who was found sitting inside a cardboard box.

She’s Scared And Lonely

The box was found in a supply shop, and the baby chimp was clinging to a tattered piece of clothing that seemed to serve as her only source of comfort.

Her Tragic Story

The one-year-old chimp named Chance was kept as a pet for the past few months. The rescuers think that her mom must have been harmed by those who acquired her as, according to Jenny Desmond, founder of LCRP, someone cannot get a baby chimp if her mother or other nearby adult family members are still alive.

She’s Neglected

Chance’s owners didn’t seem to care about her and just left her in a cardboard box in the corner. Jenny said, “It seems she spent most of her time in the box, and when outside the box, on the concrete and dirt ground at the shop.”

She’s Traumatized

The rescuers said that Chance’s eyes seemed to be vacant, and she was only clinging to a piece of clothing as a source of comfort. Jenny also said, “Her rocking and clinging to the cloth are clear indicators of stress, trauma, and a severe lack of attention and nurturing.”

She’s Malnourished Too

The baby chimp’s owners had only been feeding her rice and cornmeal, causing her to become severely malnourished and underdeveloped for her age. Also, she seemed to have some sort of fluid build-up in her head that most likely resulted from trauma.

Her Improvement

Chance was transported to the LCRP rehabilitation center, and the rescue team was stunned at her amazing change in behavior and attitude since her arrival. She started becoming less dependent on the blanket and eventually stopped rocking back and forth, started to stand up, and would stretch out her arms to be held.

Long-Term Plan

Chance will spend the next few years with LCRP so she can get the proper care that she needs. Soon, she will be introduced to other young orphaned chimps in a safe and slow process. Although it’s not yet guaranteed that she’ll be released back into the wild, as it is a long and complex process, that is LCRP’s dream for her.
