I actually conducted such a software audit like that once. A friend of mine whom I worked with but he left to work for a law office, well, they had a client who was contacted by the BSA for an audit. They were given a kit to check for unlicensed software. The law firm couldn't directly conduct the pre-audit, so they asked their IT guy, my friend, for a reference, which was me. I did a pre-audit, and they definitely had problems. Caused by a guy whom the company had fired, who then turned them in to the BSA.
Amazing how petty people can be. But yeah, you can't use the student edition of Autocad in a professional environment. Definite no-no.
