As we get older, it gets harder to perform certain tasks. Some people as they age report having difficulty reading up close, balancing on one foot, or engaging in high-intensity exercise without feeling tired and out of breath. Other things people may begin to have trouble with is bending down to place dishes in their dishwasher, trimming tree branches, or riding a bike.
One particular grandfather from West Thurston County in Washington is well aware of the changes that later adulthood often brings. However, he doesn’t let his age or changing abilities stop him from engaging in his regular yard duties. Then on February 21, 2020, the 88-year-old man fell while he was mowing the lawn, resulting in a broken hip.
Following the fall, Harold Storelee lied on his lawn for over four hours moaning and asking for help. None of his neighbors heard the lone man’s cries. Then when three Rochester Middle School boys – Hayden Lewis, Colby Dunkin, and Adam Dillon – were walking past his house, they immediately went over to help, calling an ambulance for him.
West Thurston Regional Fire EMTs quickly responded to the emergency and took the man to a local hospital for treatment.
“Had these boys not had this twist of fate, this could have been a very different story. Harold many not be with us today,” Captain Dyer said.
But not only did he receive assistance from three young boys as well as great care from both the EMTs and the medical facility itself, but the EMT workers returned to his home to finish mowing his lawn for him!
His grandson, Aiden Martin, was touched by the act of kindness and decided to take to Twitter about the incident.
“My granddad fell this morning while mowing the lawn and broke his hip. The EMT’s that took him to the hospital came back and finished his job for him” the grandson shared on Twitter along with photographs.
Several Twitter users responded to Martin, providing get well wishes to Grandpa, commending the kind EMTs, and thanking the poster for being a caring grandson.
“Your granddad is amazing for keeping up such a lovely yard, and those EMTs are amazing for being such good ‘neighbors.’ I wish your granddad a full and swift recovery. p.s. I think you’re an amazing grandson b/c you’re just oozing love & gratitude,” said a Twitter user.
Another user also takes the time to recognize the trio of middle schoolers who assisted: “Great story. Thank goodness for three middle school students. You brought tears to my eyes. And the First Responders that came back and finished mowing his lawn. Best news of the day! Glad your Granddad is safe.”
