Elephants are known for being big. They’re huge! But, what we often forget, or don’t realize, is how smart they are. Of all the land animals, they have the largest brain. They can identify languages, use tools, understand body language, and show empathy. In a study using Asian elephants, it was observed how one would comfort another in distress. The behavior included both physical contact, like stroking each other with their trunks and making vocal sounds, like chirps to signal one was there for the other.
This behavior, though, isn’t just limited to elephants. These stunning, gentle giants are devoutly loyal and care deeply about the people that touch their lives, as seen in this heartwarming video! I loved watching every second, and while the guys are horsing around, I think it’s important this video gets out to show that even though one might assume an elephant is big and clumsy, they are more than that. They have big hearts and are beautiful creatures capable of unconditional love!
Thongsri is a 17-year-old elephant who lives in Chiang Mai, Thailand. She’s been taken care of for years by her caretakers who have watched this elephant grow up. They know her well and love and respect her, but on this particular day, they wanted to play a little game. The two scheming men wanted to see how she’d react when her caretaker was attacked. This just goes to show how loyal the elephant is.
The two guys planned an attack, where the caretaker was taken down to the ground. He stumbles, trying to get back up but appears to be struggling. Immediately, Thongsri, who was at first offscreen, comes barreling into view at the sight of her favorite human lying helpless on the ground. She makes a loud trumpet cry, her ears flapping as she circles around him. Notice how her paws are bent, lowering herself to the ground as she protectively creates a safe space. Thongsri hovers, sticking around to make sure he gets up alright and in one piece. She was very worried and scared, fearful that this man was put in a dangerous situation. She appeared within seconds ready to take action. This video is proof that elephants are remarkable, caring animals!
