When Kelly Benzel from Wisconsin came across a dog for sale on Facebook, she had no idea what she was in for. Kelly found the white pitbull mix simply put up for sale online, and wanted to buy the pup as a Christmas present for her family. After picking Rocco up, in the car ride home, she noticed a foul smell coming from the dog.
Concerned, she scanned Rocco up and down and discovered an infected gash six inches long, and 1.5 inches deep, hidden underneath his black harness. She immediately rushed to the veterinarian that same night to treat the dog and give him the proper care.
Kelly wanted justice. Even though the sellers promised her the previous owners would cover the veterinary bills, Kelly contacted the police to look into the situation further. The sellers claim they couldn’t catch Rocco in the backyard long enough to remove the harness in the several months they owned him.
The vet suggested Rocco outgrew the original harness, causing it to become embedded in his neck. It appears as though the harness was never changed. He also says that it’s very uncommon for owners to not remove the harness for extended periods of time, which comes as no surprise that Rocco’s previous owners were eventually charged with the mistreatment of animals, the seller acting as a party to the crime.
There is a happy ending though – Karen is over the moon with Rocco in her life. The two share a bond, and both are lucky to have each other. Rocco is in a very good home and is adored by his human mom and her family.
