It takes a lot of guts to audition for a competition that’s going to air on TV for millions to see, not to mention the views you’ll be getting on YouTube. However, Steve Barry from Kerry, Ireland is a 31-year-old who took that chance and decided to audition for “Ireland’s Got Talent.”
For his audition, Steve chose to cover “Somewhere (There’s a Place for Us),” a song from the original Broadway musical West Side Story. According to See It Live, “the man actually auditioned for a role in a West End musical,” but he was unable to make the cut. However, he was able to impress the judges greatly with his rendition of the song and that helped him redeem himself.
Let’s get into the video! It begins with Steve moving his body to shake the nerves off up on stage before the music begins. The second he opens his mouth, a deep, strong, and very musical-like tone leaves his throat.
He loses himself in the song, and he clearly knows how to use his voice because he goes from strong to sweet with ease. About a minute into the song, as Steve’s voice only gets stronger and louder, the judges all hold hands, and they sway back and forth in their seats.
As he continues, the singer walks down the stairs and his next move makes the audience break out into laughter. He sings the lyrics, “Hold my hand,” and one of the judges, Michelle Visage, sticks out her hand for Steve who jokingly turns to her right and holds Jason Byrne’s hand, instead!
It was an unexpected and funny moment, and he keeps it going. He bends down on one knee while he holds Jason’s hand, and the audience cheers. As Steve belts out more notes, while simultaneously putting on a show, Jason gets up onto the judge’s table which earns him more laughter.
Once they both let go, Steve makes his way back up to the stage, still singing. He belts out a note as he walks up the few steps, and he holds that note for 14 seconds. The audience cheers for him the entire time. Once Steve finishes off the held note, the camera moves to the judges who stand up, cheer, and clap without hesitation for this man with the powerful voice.
