When you first start to teach yourself something, it becomes a journey. Sometimes it’s a short one where you find yourself falling off the wayside, losing momentum, and feigning interest. Whereas other times, doors open for you. Your time, effort and love that was once planted into the fertile ground of possibility start to germinate and produce seedlings. These seedlings then grow into plants that blossom into flowers, and next thing you know, you’ve cultivated a passion – and you find yourself on America’s Got Talent.
Standing in front of the judges and audience, Sofie Dossi from California is a 14-year-old self-taught contortionist, hand balancer and aerialist, and she’s ready to rock the socks off everyone.
Dressed in a gold one-piece body suit, barefoot and with her hair securely out of her face, Sofie steps up for a few words before springing into action. Simon says, “Tell me, again, and the audience, why you decided to audition this year on America’s Got Talent.” The young girl replies, “It’s one of my dreams to perform in front of millions of people.” This young talent, who explored such a challenging skill on her own and who is using props made by her father, assumes her starting position as the room looks on, unaware of what she’s got in store.
With nothing but a hoop above her and the ground below her, the music starts and Sofie is hoisted up in the air. For her first thrilling trick, she secures the hoop at the nape of her neck to rest against her shoulders, making it look like she’s balancing hands-free. The judges are already won over, but it only gets better.
What Sofie is able to do with her body is remarkable. The way in which she’s able to bend and contort is stunning to watch, but it’s also her fearlessness and confidence in her craft that makes her magnetic. She exudes power and skill, and as pleasing as it is to watch and absorb the sheer magnitude of her performance, the fact that she’s pursued this, and conquered it on her own, is astounding.
Just when you think it’s pretty darn amazing, she pulls out one more insane move that rocks the boat. You have to see it to believe it but I’ll tell you this much, the final act of her show has everyone on the edge of their seats. And, just when all eyes are on her, guest judge Reba McIntire slams the golden buzzer. It’s an amazing way to end her audition!
