What do you think when someone mentions the word “airport”? Probably loud noises, people scurrying, and lots of frustration and confusion going on as flyers try to find where they need to be, and of course, get there on time. If you’re a frequent flyer, then you probably know these feelings first-hand. Now, imagine a dog giving birth right in the middle of all this hustle-and-bustle. Yeah, that’s exactly what happened in one gone-viral story and video!
So, to cut to the chase, Eleanor Rigby, a two-year-old golden retriever and service dog, was waiting with her owner, Diane Van Attler, and her other dog by the name of Golden Nugget, for a Philadelphia flight home at the Tampa Bay International Airport. No biggie, right?
But then something unexpected occurred: Eleanor “Ellie” began to give birth! “Right now? Right here? Why?” her owner probably thought. However, in all seriousness, Ellie was accompanied by Tampa fire rescue paramedics and a nurse who helped deliver her eight sweet pups! The canine ended up delivering seven boys and one girl. Imagine the chances of that!
Fortunately, all seven of the puppies were safe and sound during delivery and deemed healthy. Even Golden Nugget, the father of the newborns, was there to witness the beautiful airport birth and appeared very excited with a smile painted on his face along with a wagging tail. Live footage was caught for us to see as well!
Crowds of airport dwellers gathered around during and after Ellie’s labor in complete shock at the random (but completely natural) event that was happening in such an unexpected place.
Trust me, the shock was mutual for Ellie’s owner. According to Diane, she knew her golden retriever was pregnant, but little did she know that her dog would give birth so soon, and let alone, at the airport. Her stepmother, Karen James, has a good idea of why the service dog may have given birth early: due to the energy and rush of the airport environment.
As expected, yes, Diane and her two dogs — who proudly assist their owner with mobility difficulties and chronic pain — missed their flight but all for a very good reason!
How would have you felt if you saw a service dog in labor at a busy, public location such as an airport? Awkward? Excited? Maybe a bit of both?
