Sometimes, when life gets stressful, it’s easy to forget all of the things that we are grateful for. Often, it is the most simple things that we take for granted, like a roof over our heads and a warm bed to sleep in at night. Or, that we have family or friends to turn to in times of trouble.
I’m a fortunate person, with a small, but comfortable home, a few close friends, and family, and wonderful pets that make my life and heart full. I have food in the cabinets, and each night I’m able to go to sleep in a safe place. My life is simple, without a lot of luxuries, but I have so much more than many others.
People are struggling, in our own neighborhoods, town, and cities. All over the world, some people have to fight each day to feed themselves and to survive. Unfortunately, many of those in difficult circumstances are children. This is especially sad because these innocent souls did not ask to end up hungry and homeless.
Rommel Quemenales is living on the streets of Quezon City in the Philippines. Photographer Maria Kabs got to know him, and his big heart when she photographed him. Rommel told the photographer that his parents had separated, and he had to quit school after second grade. He explained that he has a sister in another town and visits her when he has the money.
He also showed her his best friend, a puppy named Badgi. He has nothing to share with Badgi except love, and that’s all that the puppy wants. Even in the worst of circumstances, Rommel opens up his heart to friendship, and the two share an incredibly special bond. It’s heartbreaking, but at least these two lost souls have found each other.
