Many of us remember Koko the gorilla from our childhoods, and she continues to amaze and inspire people all over the world. We watched with wonder as this astounding animal worked with her keepers to learn and communicate. With every new thing she learned, we wanted to know more about her and her unique life.
As children, Koko taught us about our relationship with animals. She showed us that animals are thoughtful and have feelings and emotions, much like we do. She taught us about compassion and reminded us how important it is to respect nature and animals.
Koko knows sign language and enjoys games, but as it turns out, she has an interest in music, as well. She’s even met with a real rockstar! When Flea, long-time bassist for the popular award-winning rock band The Red Hot Chili Peppers, visited with Koko, it looked like he was more in awe of her star power than she was of his. Flea and his band have a lot of fans, but maybe not as many as Koko. Watching him interact with the kind gorilla and his excitement over the meeting is so wonderful to watch.
“This is just the greatest thing that could ever happen. This is the day that I will never forget in my life,” said Flea.
I have to admit that if I had a choice of whether to meet a rock star or Koko the Gorilla, Koko would win, hands-down!
Koko and Flea even had a little bit of a “jam session” when Flea let her handle one of his guitars. With her usual intelligence and curiosity, she examined the instrument and plucked at the strings. Maybe she has a future in music!
