You may only see your priest, rabbi, minister, or other religious or spiritual leader at times of worship or when you go to them to seek counsel. Perhaps you see them at a church social event or fundraiser. Outside of these situations, you’d might not really ever run into them unless you live in a small town. Even then, you’d probably only see them in the grocery store, at a stoplight or in a diner. These are all pretty innocuous places.
But, even though the person you look to for religious guidance and leadership has devoted their life to their spirituality, career, and congregation, they do have a life outside just that. Chances are, they have hobbies and interests that you never even considered. Maybe your minister enjoys woodworking, or your priest is a talented guitarist?
I’m sure that if you asked, lots of people in your life have “secret” talents. You probably do, too! Next time you’re visiting with someone that you only know certain things about like their job or the names of their kids, take a moment to ask them what they like to do when they have time for themselves. You might be surprised about what they have to say! Maybe your tough-looking, Harley-Davidson-riding neighbor loves to sit at home and crochet. Perhaps the exact opposite can be said about your friend’s sweet-looking grandmother who looks like she loves to crochet when – surprise!– she’s actually got a dirtbike in the shed out in the back. Appearances can be deceiving, everyone! It’s a lesson that we think we’ve learned once, twice, three-fold, then we meet someone who totally breaks the mold.
Just like Father Kenneth Petrie, a priest. If you asked him what he chooses to do in his free time, he just might tell you that he practices guitar. He practices so that when he decides to perform, he can shred like a rock star! No one gets this kind of skill and talent overnight, so Father Petrie has obviously devoted a lot of time and energy to his favorite hobby.
In the video below, he performs on a stage with the lights low and blows the crowd away with his cover of the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers classic, “Runnin’ Down a Dream.” The whole band is pretty good, but Father Petrie’s guitar solo is spectacular!
