For many people, being a parent represents the greatest challenge and responsibility of their lifetime. In the beginning, everything is wonderful and new. The new parents bring home their tiny baby and start the process of devoting a huge part of their time and energy to this brand new human being. These early months are devoted to health and comfort. Babies need nutrition, sleep, comfort, and socialization — mostly, they just need to be close to their parents. But, as babies grow up, priorities begin to change.
While mom and dad’s priorities are still centered around keeping their child happy and healthy, things begin to get just a little more complicated. Their baby becomes more mobile and starts moving around more. Before long, ‘baby-proofing’ becomes an absolute necessity as their little bundle of joy starts to crawl and eventually walk; it’s easy for them to get into things they shouldn’t.
More and more, responsibilities grow. Parents have to navigate the toddler years and the terrible twos, as their child begins to interact even more with the world around them and learn to deal with all kinds of new experiences and emotions. Before they know it, it’s time for their child to go off to school.
Now, parents aren’t the only ones responsible for their child’s well-being and they aren’t the only ones to influence their lives and their values. There are plenty of parents, other adults, and children around. Children will begin to gradually become more and more independent as they find their own way through the world and decide how to interact in various relationships. They start to develop a value system and decide what is important to them — yet, their parents are still an important influence.
The young boy in this video is very lucky to have an attentive mom who is determined to teach her son the values that she thinks are right. The lucky little guy is attending a professional baseball game and as the national anthem plays, he stands up and places his hand over his heart with the rest of the spectators doing the same.
However, his show of respect isn’t quite complete in his mother’s eyes. She notices that even though her son is doing his best to show his respect, he has forgotten one important thing: his hat. So, in a very “mom-like” way, she sneaks in and swipes that hat off his head, placing it over his hand. It’s a perfect mother-son teaching moment and she didn’t even have to say a word.
