Let me tell you something, I have been in a fair share of trouble for being up to no good when I was younger. I have broken a ton of lamps while running around the house, chasing my brother with mudballs; I have, unintentionally, of course, run into expensive vases and had to explain what I was up to and exactly how it happened.
Another thing to tell you is that providing these explanations isn’t all that fun. I think you know exactly what I mean by that, right?
Confessing one’s wrongdoing is not comfortable. It feels especially yucky and awkward for kids! There’s no telling what trouble it could lead to as well, like early bedtime or get grounded. It’s no cakewalk if you’re caught! Guilt, telling lies, admittance – these are new emotions for children to cope with, some of which even adults struggle with!
So when dad had to get a little creative with his two young kids regarding the family dog, he implemented a different kind of tactic that worked like a charm! Nothing like a good whodunit mystery to provide the perfect teachable moment for parents and their kids!
This dad saw an opportunity and ran with it when the family dog’s fur had been cut, but no one owned up to it. In the car, just before the kids go off to gymnastics, dad corners his young son and daughter and gives them a chance to ‘fess up – neither of which do.
So, dad has to bring in the big guns and say, “Here’s the deal. Mommy’s going to take the hair she has in a ziplock baggie, and she’s going to take it to the police station. And they’ll tell us who cut the hair cause we’ll have the fingerprints. Whoever did it, I’ll know, and you’ll be in trouble.” He then provides them with one last chance to say something. There’s a bit of back and forth, but then dad gets his answer and teaches his kids a lesson about honesty!
