When a massive storm hit Spartanburg, South Carolina, power lines were downed, and homes and businesses were damaged and even destroyed. It was suspected that a tornado caused the extensive property damage, which included the local Spartanburg Community College. But, it wasn’t until after the severe weather event that the National Weather Service was able to confirm a tornado.
Within days, it was announced that an EF2 tornado had ripped through the town, with wind speeds between 110 and 135 miles per hour. It is estimated that the tornado was at 110 mph when it struck a warehouse. The breathtaking power of the storm was captured on the local business’ CCTV video.
One of the workers described the terrifying event: “The tornado ripped through concrete and steel like it was wet paper, causing millions of dollars in damage, in seconds. By God’s grace, no one who was working that day was killed or even seriously injured. Let this be a lesson, to be ready at all times for the unknown because, as shown in this video, the storm was there in seconds and with no time to prepare or plan an escape.”
That worker was able to report on what happened because not a single person was killed or even seriously injured when this warehouse was reduced to rubble. It looks like that should have been impossible, but everyone managed to escape just moments before disaster struck. The camera that captured this harrowing footage also survived.
With the sound of an approaching train and even greater power, a tornado can flatten buildings, destroy entire towns, and take lives. Then it can just disappear. The tornado in this video was only an EF2, and much stronger storms are known to hit in the United States.
