If a mother’s love is the strongest, most protective love on earth, then the motherly love of a lion is undoubtedly something special to witness. Lioness’s feed, care for, and protect their cubs with absolute fierceness, and refuse to let anything harm them.
We often think of a male lion as the “King of the Jungle” and the strongest leader and predator on earth. But, the lioness is the hunter and protector of a pride of lions. They provide the food, care for the young, and even provide for the male lion.
Lionesses may not get much credit, but they are the ones responsible for the safety and health of their family and pride — especially the young cubs. Caring for their cubs is their priority. But, even though it’s extremely rare, a lioness has been seen caring for another species, too.
Graeme Mitchley, a teacher, was on vacation with his wife at Kruger National Park in South Africa when he witnessed a lioness caring for an orphaned baby antelope: “At first, it looked like a lioness carrying her cub. However, at second glance, it turned out to be a lion carrying a newborn antelope,” Graeme said.
He was truly shocked and impressed by the rare sighting. It’s unclear what happened to the young antelope’s mother, but it’s now being cared for by the toughest mama out there. The lioness can be seen with the antelope between her huge paws, licking it as if it is one of her cubs.
“We visit the Kruger often, but this was a rare sighting for both of us,” said the couple. “That’s why the Kruger National Park is the best place on earth, you never know what lies in wait around the following bend.”
