In this day and age, you can make anything uniquely your own. By combining styles and influences, something that was old, and forgotten or done so well by somebody else, can be revamped and repackaged for a new audience. New life can be breathed into something to make it fresh again.
Prodijig is a dance troupe from Ireland, and like their strange (but inventive, and once you know what they do, clever…) name suggests, this talented bunch has come together to combine traditional Irish dancing with a very, VERY modern and contemporary flow. Just watch how this routine goes down, it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen combined before.
Appearing on “Got To Dance” in the UK, Prodijig won the third season of the show, and it’s not hard to see why. The group comprises seven dancers, led by World Champion Irish dancer from Cork, Ireland, Alan Kenefick. The esteemed dancer has previously performed alongside “Lord of the Dance” founder Michael Flatley, in his show “Celtic Tiger” and has been the principal dancer in various productions around the world, most notably Riverdance.
But, Alan’s biggest undertaking and success is with his breathtaking dance troupe, Prodijig. These guys make rules, then break them! They are risk-takers and naysayers to the norm, showing the world that they can retain a modicum of tradition, but still be relevant to a contemporary audience. It was during their appearance on “Got To Dance UK” that they performed for 1.9 million people, helping them achieve even more success after the show.
In this video, Prodijig takes to the stage in their spectacular final performance. All seven dancers are lined up in a row, and to the sound of the drumroll, the troupe immediately gets to tapping. Their footwork is in line with the music and it’s fierce. From the high-intensity succession of their tapping, they shift into more body movement. While the tapping technique is traditional – notice the crossovers, toe-to-heel tapping, and leg extensions – everything else isn’t! And, neither is the music.
There’s no sign of anything Celtic but that suits us just fine. Their talent shines through immensely with their tight group choreography and high energy movement. They take up the whole stage, weaving in and out, and even throwing some robotic moves in there. It’s a feast for the eyes, and one for the books!
