I once had to put out a fire. It was terrifying and happened in the blink of an eye. It was at my workplace, and thankfully, I was able to react quickly. I grabbed the nearest fire extinguisher (miraculously, the life-saving, how-to-use-a-fire-extinguisher acronym surfaced to mind, PASS – pull, aim, squeeze and sweep) and I was able to put it out without much damage or drama. Whew!
While that was a small fire, had it not been noticed or taken care of properly, a small fire can and will turn into a big raging one. All it takes is a spark and next thing you know, you’re in trouble. This is what happened when everyone’s worst nightmare became real for an unknowing mom from California, Latana Chai, and her 7-month-old baby, Masailah. Luckily, they had a furry friend who was able to step in and save the day.
It all started when Latana heard her 8-month-old pit bull, Sasha, barking and banging much louder than usual. Latana was instantly tipped off that something wasn’t right because the dog is usually well-mannered and quiet. This behavior sounded frantic and unusual. The mother tore down the stairs to open the back door and check on her pup. The dog ran in as Latana looked on in horror at her neighbor’s unit that was up in flames and quickly making its way over to hers.
The woman ran back inside to grab her baby, but Sasha had already beat her to it and was literally dragging Masailah by her diaper out of her bed. A four-legged hero sensed danger was near and took matters into her own paws! “[Sasha] saved everybody,” Latana told KTXL. “Because if it wasn’t for her, I don’t think that any of us in this complex would have known anything.” Thank goodness for the quick-thinking pup who loves her family and knew that she had to do something to save them.
We all hear about human heroes who come through in adversity, but there are animals like Sasha who also commit heroic acts when we least expect them to.
