Imagine driving down the highway and coming across an abundance of cash. I’m not saying just a few $20 bills that happened to fly out of someone’s window on a nice breezy day, I’m talking a few hundred bills that amounted to over $5000, making their way everywhere on a busy freeway. Has something like that ever happened to you? If not, then Terry Brubaker can tell you exactly what it feels like.
Terry was driving through Gloversville, New York one day in January when she noticed something fluttering in the air around her. As she took a closer look, still driving, she saw that they were $20, $50, and $100 bills flying everywhere and hitting her windshield. She immediately decided to stop and investigate the matter.
Upon getting out of her car, Terry noticed that there were so many more bills fluttering around than what she noticed while she was driving and sitting inside the car. She quickly began collecting all the money she could and got back into her car—she had a total of $6600 worth of cash in her possession.
Being a good Samaritan, Terry took the cash she found to the local police station. She walked into the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office to turn the cash in and also file a report for the police to find the rightful owner. It turned out that the cash belonged to a woman named Kim Steenburg.
Kim was on her way to the bank with an envelope full of cash when she jumped into her car, forgetting that she had put the envelope on the roof of her car; Kim left the money on the roof while fastening her niece’s seatbelt in the back seat. She started driving and didn’t notice the bills scattering everywhere as she went down the highway.
But, the young woman was soon notified of the money found by Terry—Kim had also filed a police report about the missing cash.
Kim’s husband passed away last year in a limo car crash that killed several people. For those who remember the incident, the crash was the deadliest of its kind in over a decade. The money Kim had lost on the freeway was going towards a honeymoon cruise she was planning on taking to scatter her husband’s ashes into the sea. The plans are back on now that Terry helped the widow get the cash back.
This story is a heartful example of the good in the people around us. Terry’s honesty restores faith in humankind, that’s for sure! Click on the video below to watch the full news report and first-hand accounts from both the women involved.
