They say that when it rains, it pours. Then there are times that when it snows, it dumps. If you’ve ever lived through a snowstorm, you know how heavy it is to shovel! Lots of snow is hard to push around and can stick around for weeks if the weather stays cold. Snowfall makes life a little more challenging—driving, walking, moving, everything runs slower.
What’s more, if you don’t get rid of it in the beginning, the snow piles up or melts then hardens, turning into a thick, heavy slippery winter wonderland. Moving the snow out of high-traffic areas like sidewalks, parking lots and roads, ain’t an easy job, but someone has to do it.
Marlene Downing is 82-years-old from Muskegon, Michigan, and she’s doing what needs to be done. After a recent dumping of snow, the senior took to her massive snowblower to get through the rough and tough job–and it’s no small feat. With such big amounts of snow, she took on the job herself saying, “I like being outside, and I like the snow. I just don’t need any help. I got this big machine, it works great.”
When the snow came down in her neighborhood, the self-described “tough old broad” didn’t call her grandchildren for help. In fact, she says she doesn’t need it. “I’m sure they would help if I asked. My grandson has plowed it once but I’m fine. I like being out there.” It was when she was clearing her driveway that someone snapped a few pics, which has since put Marlene in the spotlight. This grandma getting it done has taken the Internet by storm. Whether because she’s an inspiration, one tough cookie or just really loves snow, she’s got all eyes on her.
Marlene also comments that the machine reminds her of her beloved bike. “I think the engine sounds like my Harley maybe.” She drives her motorcycle with a sidecar with her Greyhound, Pippa, who comes along for the ride. Marlene loves the road in the summer but has to accept the snow in the winter. She doesn’t mind though. The heavy snow and freezing temperatures in Harvey, North Dakota, where she grew up, seem to be really, really cold in comparison. Marlene sure is one fierce lady with a fantastic attitude and lots of energy, even in subzero weather.
