The best thing about being a child is that you have no inhibitions. If something seems right, you’ll do it, regardless of how scary the situation may be, and 7-year-old Cameron Simoncic in South Carolina is a perfect example of a child with no fear and lots of love for his family.
Cameron set out on a mission to save his dad one afternoon—this mission involved him riding his bike down a busy highway. Thankfully, his former teacher found him amongst the cars and traffic and stopped to help. Here’s the entire story for you.
Speaking to WSPA, the little boy told the news outlet that he came back from school one afternoon and saw that his dad was lying unconscious on the kitchen floor. He was in a diabetic shock and needed medical assistance as soon as possible. The 7-year-old knew he needed to act fast and got to work. “My dad has diabetes and whenever he has these episodes and whenever it happens, his brain can’t function.”
Before jumping on his bike and seeking help, Cameron tried a couple of other things. He tried to call 911 using his dad’s cellphone but was locked out of it; he ran over to his neighbor’s house and knocked on their door, but unfortunately, no one was home. That’s when he knew he needed to get help from someone else—grandma!
“I got on my bike and tried to ride to my grandma’s.” It was a 5-mile ride and it required him going on the highway. But, nothing was going to stop this little superhero from saving his dad.
Keller Sutherland, Cameron’s first-grade teacher last year, saw the little boy dodging traffic on the busy highway. She hadn’t recognized the boy but decided she needed to help. Talking about the incident, Keller remembers, “I just told my husband, I said, ‘There’s a small child on his bicycle riding down the road. I’m not sure what’s going on, but I feel like I need to just turn around and see what’s going on.’”
Two other men had stopped to help Cameron by the time Keller reached the boy. They all helped him remain calm and called 911 to get emergency help over to Cameron’s dad. Cameron was able to direct his teacher back to his home so he can be there for his father. The ambulance came and paramedics were able to give the man the injections he needed.
Interestingly enough, just that morning Keller was debating on whether or not she should change careers. But, after this incident she knows she’s in the right field: “There’s no doubt that God placed me where he did when he needed me.”
