Home ownership is something a lot of us dream about. To be able to own and live in the house of your dreams, worry and debt-free is truly a gift. You may have this already, and that is a blessing. Maybe you don’t, and if it’s something you want, then this story is for you.
When Alla Wagner fell out of her chair and hurt her back beyond repair, her entire life changed. She became far less mobile, unable to use the stairs and move around the house. As a result, she’s only able to access one part of her massive $1.6 million house and property.
Alla’s gorgeous home is located rurally, just southwest of Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It’s a 5,000 square foot home that sits atop a beautiful, expansive property with a landscape of rolling fields, mountain, and farmland in the distance. It’s a stunning home with multiple bedrooms and floors, even a wine cellar! Here’s the thing, Alla can’t sell it. Even after reducing the price, she hasn’t had any takers.
Feeling downtrodden and discouraged, it was Alla’s daughter who gave her an idea. It was the movie, Spitfire Grill, that led to some inspiration. In the film, the restaurant owner wants to find a new owner, so she decides to hold an essay contest, at $100 an entry to help her pass on the ownership.
In a similar fashion, Alla is doing the same thing. Having worked as a translator and librarian, Alla chose to hold a writing contest as words and language have been such an important part of her life. She’s inviting anyone who wants her home to submit a written piece of original work at $25 per entry, explaining how taking ownership of her house would change your life. “If somebody wants to write a poem, they can write a poem. If somebody wants to write five paragraphs telling me why is it important for them to get this place, [they can],” she said.”It has to just really touch on my heartstrings and not necessarily because of a sad story but because of the motivation.”
Alla is hoping 60,000 people apply, that way, she can make back what the house is worth while one lucky winner gets to keep the incredible property. However, Alla is very sad to be giving away her home, and so is her family. Alla’s son Chris says, “She can’t go downstairs, she can’t move around right, so if she had a house on one floor, it would be better.” he said.
