The sun is out, and the temperatures are warming up — summer is almost here! We’ve had a very rainy spring, but hopefully, that will end soon and the sun will start to peek out from behind the clouds. It’s time to spend some time outdoors and in the garden.
Truthfully, we can grow plants year round, and some of the plants on this list are indoor plants, but I’m rarely in the mood for planting and potting in the winter. Also, planting even indoor plants is a messy job, and clean-up is a lot easier when done outside. I’m not a master gardener, but growing easy plants makes me feel like one.
Here are some of the easiest plants to grow, indoors and out, even if you think you have a brown thumb!
1. Sunflowers
Sunflowers are not only beautiful, but they are simple to grow. Just throw a few seeds in some sunny soil, and they will sprout and grow quickly. But, be aware that some sunflowers can grow to be more than 14 feet tall!

Hard to spell, but easy to plant, nasturtiums have large seeds and grow quickly and easily. As a bonus, the beautiful flowers are edible and can add spice and color to food dishes like salads.

When you see “sweet peas,” you may be thinking of food, but these are beautiful flowers that smell wonderful and are easy to grow. The large seeds are easy to handle and plant. Sow your sweet peas near a fence or other supportive structure, and they will grow right up against it. Sun and water are all you need!
4. Agave
Agave is a type of succulent with several varieties. It can grow well indoors or outdoors, as long as it has sun. If you live in a climate with cold winters, you will need to bring the plant inside during the winter and make sure that it gets some daily sun. Like most succulents, agave requires little watering.

Marigolds are easy to plant and are satisfying because they grow quickly from seeds. They are hardy plants, like lots of sun, and can even and deter certain types of bugs from your garden. They also come in a ton of varities!

A zebra plant is another type of succulent, easily recognizable by the beautiful stripes on the leaves. Some succulents can be killed by overwatering, but zebra plants do well in moderate sun with moderate water. They can grow indoors or out, but should be brought inside in cold weather.
7. Tomatoes
If you’re looking into branching out into vegetable gardening, then tomatoes are a great place to start. They grow quickly and easily and can even be grown on a small deck or patio in a pot or container.

Peonies are popular, beautiful, and inexpensive. They grow in nearly any climate, require very little maintenance, and will come back year after year. People have reported peonies that are over 100 years old!

Peace lilies are gorgeous, but low maintenance plants that grow well indoors. They don’t require much water or much light. Placed in an attractive pot, they are a great addition to any room.

Rosemary is a hardy, easy to grow herb that can be found at most local hardware stores or anywhere that has plants. It can be grown indoors or outdoors and is used for flavoring food. Whether you want to grow flowers, vegetables, or herbs, or you have an indoor or outdoor space for your plants, there is something out there for everyone. It doesn’t take a lot of time, money, or effort to grow these super easy plants!
