The job of a nurse can be demanding and hectic. Due to this, a good nurse should not only be skilled and knowledgable in their field but should also be able to work well under pressure, be quick to react in times of an emergency, and have physical and mental endurance to withstand long shifts.
While it might seem pleasant becoming a nurse as many of them can afford to work part-time due to their higher hourly pay, the reality is, even working a couple of days a week as a nurse can be exhausting. For nurses working in a hospital where there’s a shortage of staff, tensions can be high, shifts can be longer and more frequent than usual, and breaks may be cut short.
Jessica, a stroke nurse from Rome, New York, knows firsthand how draining a nursing career can be. Her husband, Phillip Urtz, may not quite understand exactly what the job of a nurse entails, but one thing’s for sure: he’s a supportive partner.
So, to show his wife how much he cares, he decided to snap a picture of her after a 14-hour workday eating a quick dinner, a sandwich in the kitchen. Right after eating, Jessica would be going to bed and waking up to start her workday all over again. Phillip then posted the photo on social media.
But it wasn’t the picture itself that went viral, but rather, the sweet caption Phillip wrote underneath it. Once you read what Phillip has to say, you’ll be in tears:
“This is my wife Jessica having dinner after a 14-hour day. She comes home from work, has enough time to eat and get ready for bed and it’s back to work the next day for another shift. She is up early to get ready for her day. She doesn’t like to be bothered in the morning and I respect that. She showers, throws her hair up, grabs her lunch gives the dog and me a kiss and heads out the door. Although her job may be demanding, Jessica is completely dedicated to her duties as a nurse.
At work, she takes care of people who are having the worst days of their lives. Strokes, car accidents, motorcycle accidents, falls, breaks, brain damage and more. She takes care of mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, friends,nurse-note and families. It doesn’t matter who you are or what happened. She will take care of you.”
And Phillip supports her career and offers a lending hand for those days she needs a little pep talk.
“If she does want to talk, I will listen. Sometimes she comes home happy and sometimes she comes home sad. But no matter how she feels, she is always on time for her next shift. I love her with all my heart. My wife is my hero. My wife is a stroke nurse.”
