When Rhonda Whitney of Colorado Springs, Colorado attended her daughter’s talent show, she expected the usual. There would be kids singing, dancing, and performing funny routines. The children on stage likely would have spent hours practicing for the show.
One little girl, 10-year-old Makayla Ferrell was prepared for the show, but when she stepped in front of the audience and started to sing, things began to go wrong. With all eyes on her and the music playing in the background, her nervousness showed, and she was unable to go on with her performance.
Her mother, Shaye Washington, recognized that her daughter was frightened and on the verge of freezing up. So, she did the only thing she could — she got right up on stage with her daughter and sang the song with her. Appropriately, the song happened to be “Rise Up” by Andra Day, a fitting song for this wonderful, uplifting moment.
“I was like, ‘Uh-oh it looks like she’s about to have a meltdown or have a breakdown.’ And I don’t want her to feel defeated… so that’s when I just stepped in to help her going,” Shaye explained to CBS News.
“What her mom did had me in tears, and I cry every time I watch it. To the mom and daughter in this video: thank you for showing us all something so beautiful, and inspirational. In my eyes you won the talent show,” Rhonda wrote in her viral Facebook post.
The moment shared between Makayla and her mom, Shaye, and everyone else in the audience shows great strength, compassion, and that we sometimes need just a little helping hand to get us through times of adversity.
Also, this clip also goes to show what parents will do to see their children succeed. No parent would leave their child hanging like that, especially in front of a group of people. I commend Mom for getting up there and helping her daughter through the stage fright. It happens to the best of us! Way to go Mom!
