Cats have the uncanny ability to surprise and delight. Their reputation for being aloof and independent isn’t always the case, nor is it their tried and true character. As a cat lover myself, I know that they have big hearts, they like to be a little (okay a lot) mischievous! It comes as no surprise to me that this story starts off with a little mischief. It wouldn’t be very cat-like otherwise!
When a neighbor in South Carolina noticed that the neighborhood cat, Miss Kitty, had taken an interest in a litter of puppies, she thought it was rather strange. Upon further investigation, what she found out was equal parts devastating and beautiful.
This story starts off on a sad note but has a happy ending, I promise! Miss Kitty had a litter of kitten across the street from her home. What was supposed to be a moment of joy and motherhood quickly went the other way. Her kittens were born weak and frail and died very suddenly. However, around the same time, a neighborhood dog also gave birth to a litter of puppies but didn’t show much interest in her new babies. She was neglectful and didn’t tend to them the way a mother should. In a twist of fate, Miss Kitty saw an opportunity and seized it.
One of the neighbors on the street, Linda Blackwell, was sitting eating lunch when she noticed Miss Kitty with a little black puppy dangling from her mouth, traveling across the yard, who then picked up another. And another, eventually bringing the entire litter over to hers. Linda was in disbelief. Miss Kitty was nursing all the puppies, believing they were hers. As unusual as it is for one species to nurse another species, everyone was astounded that Miss Kitty’s instinct was so strong.
