When I was younger, I loved to sing and dance. I would stand in front of the mirror in the bathroom and sing my favorite song and come up with dance moves to go with it! I was always good at doing that when I was all by myself, alone in a room with no audience or family members watching. But, to sing/dance when someone is looking, and even when they specifically ask you to do it, is difficult.
Singing on command can be a little daunting. In fact, being told to do anything in the moment, on cue – like right now – can be a bit daunting. You don’t expect someone to ask you to sing a certain song, just like that out of the blue. You’re not even prepared! Unlike me, however, there are some natural performers out there among us who can turn on their star power at any time, and the result can be astounding.
In this video, only seconds after the camera turns on, a woman’s voice eagerly asks 8-year-old Kelsi Kee, “Can you sing again?” Instantly, without missing a beat, Kelsi stops what she’s doing, leans against the refrigerator rail in Walmart’s meat section, and bursts out into Adele’s challenging, full-bodied and transitory “Rolling in the Deep” – at the drop of a hat. Here is Kelsi sounding like she’s invoking the spirit of Adele, as if the international chart-topping pop star is singing through this little girl nonchalantly leaning against packaged beef.
The best part? Kelsi looks blasé. She starts singing with ease, making it look simple to pull off, and like anyone could do it; her body language giving off a vibe of familiarity as if she’s belted out a tune in public a hundred times before. Then, once she reaches the chorus, Kelsi’s inner performer emerges and Wal-Mart becomes her stage, hitting tough notes with the same accuracy and confidence as Adele herself.
Kelsi doesn’t slow down or get tired either. She whips through the song, her delivery never losing pace or sounding out of breath. Chatter between women is overheard, “oohs” and “aahs” are exchanged, and just as Kelsi finishes up, a resounding “WOW” and clapping is heard just as the camera shuts off.
Ade… I mean Kelsi, can you please sing for us again?
