I love to steal a few moments and find a spot where I’m alone to sing. My favorite hangouts are in the elevator, in the car or while taking a shower. I’m a little shy, so these places are where I find solitude and can just let it rip. Spoiler alert: I don’t have the best voice, unlike Mike Morgan from the Codington County Sheriff’s Office in Watertown, South Dakota, USA. He too likes to sing solo in lonely places, but his game is way better than mine, plus, he’s just discovered a rock star shortcut to enhance his voice, naturally!
Waiting for just the right time, Mike was able to sneak in after hours into the courthouse so he could perform a song, near and dear, and close to his heart.
I must admit, he chose a really good spot, but why a courthouse? After having to show up at the courthouse so many times as part of the job, he couldn’t help but notice that this might just be the best spot to perform. “The courthouse is closed, I’ve been wanting to do this for a very long time. The acoustics in here are awesome.” So when an opportunity to use this space as his stage presented itself, he showed up ready to sing and pull off a fabulous show off the cuff!
Mike sings the American national anthem, “Star Spangled Banner” and it’s chilling. His perfect pitch, excellent command of the lyrics and know-how of the cadence of the song are finally paired with the acoustics he’s been dreaming of to make for one stunning performance.
There’s an ethereal quality to his vocals thanks to the cavernous layout of the courthouse. The cop’s voice reverberates and echoes perfectly inside the space. It’s haunting and adds such depth to his already beautiful voice. His unusual choice of setting lends itself as the perfect backdrop to the national anthem as it stands for peace and justice, plus the flag in the background doesn’t hurt either! In his free time when he’s not out and about serving and protecting, Mike moonlights as a singer. I’m not the least bit surprised, this man’s voice is truly a gift.
