Everybody’s got a story rife with struggles, pain, joy, and triumph. Otherwise, it’s just not life. It’s the downs that break us, but it’s the ups that make us. And while we’re on the roller coaster, you’re strapped in, so you’ve got to figure out a way to enjoy the ride, whatever point you’re at!
This is Michael Ketterer from Tennessee, USA, and he just got the golden buzzer for an epic and authentic performance that had everyone, judges included, besides themselves.
Michael is a pediatric mental health nurse living in Orange County, California. He’s a singer on the side and confesses he’s nervous as he walks on stage. Cue Simon’s skepticism! The two go on chatting, when Michael says, “My family is the reason why I’m here, my wife and my six children. One of the things that happen, especially because my children came out of foster care, when you’re surviving, you’re not dreaming… And that has been one of the most rewarding things, is providing them with a home and a safe environment where they are free to dream, and I’m here because I want to show them that if their dad can live out his dreams, then nothing is impossible for them.” Everyone claps, Simon gives him the thumbs up, and his entire family on the side is cheering him on.
The nurse takes his position on the stage, closes his eyes, and draws strength from within. He chooses to sing the Bee Gees’ “Love Somebody,” and even Simon doesn’t have anything bad to say about this performance! Michael’s authenticity and realness break through his nerves and shine so bright. He breaks into the song with raw emotion, carrying the simple tune and lyrics with such grace, it’s hard to not get goosebumps.
Michael finished his song to resounding applause, and Simon says, “…sometimes for me, it’s just about being real and a surprise. I’m being honest with you because you were so nervous. I was concerned for you, but I think sometimes actions speak louder than words.” And then he slams the golden buzzer! What a performance and a beautiful gift for Michael and his family. This golden buzzer is so well-deserved, and we hope that this moment helps inspire Michael’s kids to do everything they can to achieve their dreams — their dad just did!
