When you’ve been working at your job for a while, you get used to the ropes. You know what to expect, and probably feel like you could do it in your sleep. You’re used to knowing where everything is, how to talk to your boss, and what to say to customers and clients. It’s only human nature to be able to adapt to something once you’ve been doing it for a while.
And then come those instances that totally throw you for a loop! A moment where one second everything is running as per usual, until a wrench gets thrown into the wheel, and you have to think really, really fast, especially if it’s a life or death situation.
At a McDonald’s restaurant in Doral, Florida, USA, 22-year-old Pedro Viloria works the drive-thru window and has been doing so for quite some time. He showed up to work just like any other day, when one interaction with a customer changed drastically. Pedro served a woman in an SUV with her two kids in the back and paid for her meals with no problem. It was when he returned with the food that he saw something was up. “I see that she’s inflating her neck trying to breathe… and I immediately thought something was going wrong… I thought, ‘oh my god this woman is unconscious, I gotta do something because she’s going to crash maybe.'”
Turns out, the driver was an off-duty Miami police officer in the midst of a medical episode. She fell unconscious causing her foot to lift off the brake and roll forward. It’s at this exact moment that Pedro knew something bad was happening and literally jumps out the drive-thru window to investigate.
The rolling SUV narrowly misses another car and slams into a curb when Pedro runs back in for help. Talk about being in the right place at the right time because the driver in the car next in line was a paramedic, who jumps out immediately to assist, and an off-duty fire rescue member who just walked in for breakfast saw what was happening, grabbed his partner so they too can help. Thanks to everyone’s quick thinking and the use of a nearby AED machine, the unconscious woman was able to get help immediately. These are all real-life heroes!
