Kind Stranger Removes Boots Off His Feet To Give To A Man In Need

Kindness has the capacity to go a long way. It doesn’t have to be some big grand gesture that costs a lot of money or takes a lot of time. Sometimes it’s the simple things that make an impact. It’s the human decency a stranger offers to make another person’s life more comfortable that stands out. There truly are good people out there who will do the right thing no matter what the cost.

With Chicago’s sub-zero temperatures, the thriving metropolis depends on its public transportation system more than ever. The subway is filled with commuters just trying to get home to warmth, moving its people from A to Z, and to every nook and cranny in between.

As witnessed by transit rider Jessica Bell, late on a Friday night in the middle of a particularly cold snap, she noticed an “older, weathered-looking” homeless man. He had swollen feet poking out of worn-out gym shoes, and she could see b***d soaking through them even though he was wearing a layer of socks. According to Jessica, the older man from Louisiana feared his feet could have been frostbitten.

What she witnessed next truly touched Jessica, inspiring her to “be the change,” noting that the random act of kindness to follow is just one of the numerous selfless acts that happen every day.

Maurice Anderson, in town from Kentucky to visit family, was sitting nearby; Jessica describes him as “younger” and, “carrying a satchel and a suitcase.” Without hesitation, and after noticing the older man’s feet, Maurice removed his high-end-looking boots and pair of socks before opening his bag to produce a backup pair of shoes for himself.

Maurice kindly handed over the boots (he only had them for three weeks!) after a brief exchange about size, and he advised the older man to wash his feet before changing socks and shoes. Maurice got off at his stop shortly after.

And that was it. Quiet compassion, empathy, and generosity that asks for nothing in return. It’s these experience that add to the richness and meaning of life. What can you do today to help a stranger or someone you know?
