Man Voluntarily Descends Down Sewer To Save Ducklings’ Lives

Do you ever spot a baby animal and can’t help but instantly go into mother or father mode? I know I do this all the time. It’s hard not to want to talk in a cute, high-pitched voice to a teeny-tiny critter and want to shower them with hugs, cuddles, and kisses. How can anyone resist?

A man named Kyle Morgan from Jackson, Michigan has that same instinct. On June 12, 2020, his fiancee, Monica Cyrocki, heard from their mail carrier that he had heard wailing ducklings from a nearby storm drain. Cyrocki then called Morgan, who then tended to the situation as several other neighbors stood around the watch the brave rescue.

Despite the smell, the first thing Morgan did was plop down the narrow storm drain. He wore proper gear consisting of long sleeves, long pants, boots, and a pair of gloves. His was on a mission to save the ducklings!

Initially, the neighbors had difficulty knowing how many ducklings were in the storm drain. Some thought there were only four. Then they realized there were more.

Morgan ended up saving six ducklings with a tiny net. To bring the little, feathered fellas up to dry land, another neighbor lowered down a bucket on a rope for him to place the ducklings in and lure back up.

Not long after thinking he was finished, the group realized there were even more ducklings that needed to be saved. Three more were hidden deeper into the sewer pipe, which were also eventually saved by Morgan. A true hero at heart!

The man’s reasoning for being the one to retrieve the innocent birds was simple.

“To be honest man, I’ve got a newborn son and this mother bird was freaking out. I had to. I said, ‘I’m going in there,'” he said.

Unfortunately, the mother bird was scared off after seeing several neighbors gather around her trapped offspring.

But no worries; the ducklings are doing great now. Two other neighbors, Carrie and James Grant, drove them to Eaton Rapids-based Wildside Rehabilitation and Education Center to be properly raised after the mother was unable to be found.

The director of the rehabilitation center, Louise Sagaert, is happy to report that all nine ducklings are remaining happy and healthy. They will be in great care until they’re strong and old enough to be eventually released on their own.
