Teachers Perform Les Mis Flash Mob During Assembly

Usually, when we think of back to school, we think of the mass amounts of students getting ready to head back into the classroom. Summer is over and the lessons start. Even advertising is catered to students with back to school specials on clothing, supplies, electronics, books, and the list goes on. But, students aren’t the only ones headed back into the school year. What about the staff that keeps the schools running smoothly? Teachers, principals, assistants, educators, custodians, and all the other adults behind the scenes who provide a safe and structured nurturing learning environment?

These people are heroes in their own right and have a big responsibility. After all, they are shaping the lives and minds of future adults who will join society and maybe change the world. Back to school is big for educators too, and this video is a charming reminder that they have a huge say and a massive role.

At the West Des Moines Community School in Iowa, USA, the faculty has come together for one last meeting, one day before the school doors open and young minds come in. The community school district superintendent has gathered everyone in the assembly room for a speech and pep talk. What starts as a rather dry address, suddenly transforms into a wildly successful flash mob that has a lot of the staff up in their seats singing and dancing.

The speech is interrupted by one of the twelve music teachers and staff members who emerge from behind the curtain to perform a version of “One Day More” from Les Miserables, except it’s completely rewritten. They’ve revamped the theatrical version to make it uniquely their own, introducing a totally new theme. Their song highlights how they have, “One day more! Another year and one more planning day. As we start this road to the end of May; These students who in spring were here Will surely come to school this year. One day more!” It goes on to showcase back to school from an educator’s perspective. These dedicated teachers wrote and rehearsed this performance throughout the summer. Job well done!

I know I haven’t been to a welcome back assembly with such an entertainment factor, ever. How about you?
